I ended up dropping the ball last year and stopped doing ‘What I’ve Read’ posts. I aim to fix that this year.
As always, I’ve started off the year with a goal of 50 books in the GoodReads challenge. This is more to keep the challenge alive and make it easier to find the books I’ve read each month!
This year is off to a great start with six books read. These were mostly audiobooks as I drove along with a novel I picked up at the library because I liked the cover and a middle grade book. Here’s the breakdown:
- The House that Joy Built by Holly Ringland – this was an audiobook recommended by a librarian at the Monash City Library in Mt Waverley. I found a lot of the book frustrating as it’s not fear stopping my creativity, but there was a line that stood out. ‘Create what you love’, and this will be my mantra for the year. More about that in future posts.
- Deception by Leslie Pearse – another audiobook with an interesting storyline that shows that we often have no idea what our parents have been through before we existed and why they made the decisions they did.
- The Husbands by Holly Gramazio – my third audiobook for the month and this one had a fascinating idea. The main character has an attic that sends her random husbands. I’m still trying to work out what I think about this story, but it was a lot of fun, especially if you suspend your disbelief. There were a lot of twists in it, and some quite interesting husbands.
- The Bushrangers Daughter by Michelle Worthington – a middle grade book by one of my author friends. This is another book that I’m not sure about, it had an interesting story and was a good snapshot of life in Queensland in the past.
- Second Chances at the Board Game Cafe by Jennifer Page – I picked up this novel at the Myli library in Inverloch simply because I liked the look of the cover, and I loved this book. There is wonderful autistic representation and a great story about new starts. It helps if you’re a fan of The Great British Sewing Bee, which I am.
- Sunshine Through Rain by Penelope Janu – my fourth audiobook for the month, I have done a lot of driving during January! I enjoyed this romance set in rural Australia, and it’s another one that shows that we don’t always know what we think we know about our families.
That does it for the books I read in January. I hope you got some reading done too.
