Reading to Relax

Oct 3, 2025 | Blog

Reading is something I have always done for my mental health and for regulation. When I was at high school, I always carried a book with me and would read when I had some spare time… including in class when I had finished my work! I had thought I was simply a bookworm, but the more I learn about the neurodivergent brain and regulation, the more I see that is what I was doing.

I still read to relax and regulate myself. The key is to read books that I want to read, books that make me happy.

There is no ‘should’ when it comes to reading to relax, and there is also no such thing as a ‘guilty pleasure’. I read a wide variety of books, including romances and kids books, and enjoy them all. I also read in a way that is accessible and works for me.

My first choice is a print book as I struggle to read on a screen. That said, there are still times when I struggle to read words on a page. This could be because I’m exhausted and worn out and can’t focus on the words, or my brain simply says ‘nope, not today’ and I can’t sit still. When that happens, I listen to audiobooks, mostly in the car while driving. I have found these help me focus more on the road! I tend to pick lighter stories for audiobooks.

When I am able, I’ll curl up on the couch, put on some music, make a cuppa, and read. As I get engaged in the story, I can feel myself relaxing.

When choosing books, pick something that appeals to you. You may start with some bestseller lists, or revisit old favourites. Another option is to browse the shelves of the library to see if something appeals (if that’s overwhelming, you can ask the librarians for recommendations). Pick something that looks interesting to you, rather than a book you feel you should read.

Pick a format that suits you, whether ebook, print book, or audiobook. Settle yourself in a way that feels comfortable, grab a drink and snack, and spend some time getting lost in a book and forgetting about the world for a while. It will all be there when you get back from your literary adventure.

Reading is a cheap and simple way to relax and forget the world for a while. I know this is one reason I love reading, and I know this is good for my mental health, it’s my form of self-care.
