BTS – My Princess Wears a Superhero Cape

Apr 23, 2026 | Blog

Back in 2012, I entered a flash fiction competition to write a story about an unconventional princess. When I saw the prompt, a line jumped into my head – My princess wears a superman cape. From there, I wrote a story about two little girls playing with princess dolls. One girl insists that her princess wears a cape, lives in a secret hideout, and defeats the dragon.

The exciting part is that I won!

From the time I wrote the story, I knew it would make a great story for a picture book.

I worked on it, and it took on many different iterations, before I went back to what was essentially the original story, just formatted for a picture book. It had been edited too. I submitted it to publishers, and heard nothing.

In 2019, I decided to back myself and self-publish the story. I approached Julieann from Lilly Pilly Publishing to see if she could help me, including finding an illustrator. She recommended Megan Higginson, a friend of mine who insisted she wasn’t ready to illustrate a book yet. Megan is an incredibly talented illustrator and we were able to engage her to do the illustrations.

Megan spent time during the 2020 lockdowns on the illustrations and it was a joy following the process. She brought my words to life in a way I couldn’t have imagined. The dragon that appears through the book is simply perfect.

My Princess Wears a Superhero Cape was published in early 2021, as we were planning a book launch, Victoria went into lockdown once more! We still haven’t had a book launch event, but that hasn’t stopped us. The book is available and many people have bought it and loved the story, and Megan’s illustrations.

This book is available in both hardcover and paperback. Click here to order from Amazon.
