A little bit of silliness

Apr 13, 2020 | News

We are living in ‘unprecedented’ times. There are a lot of people who talk about all the things we could be doing during this time, and one of these is writing a book.

I don’t know about you, but I’ve been  a bit all over the place lately. It has been hard to focus on simple things like cooking dinner some days, let alone being able to sit and concentrate on my latest novel or picture book.

This is where I’ve been thankful for my nephews.

I have five nephews, aged 3 to 10 years. They have been setting me writing prompts and I’ve been having a lot of fun writing silly stories for them. One or two may turn into something longer, and they may or may not be published, but the purpose of these stories is for a bit of silliness and to share a story with my nephews while we can’t see each other.

I’ve been covering topics I never thought I’d write about, including writing a story about farts for one of my nephews!

It’s the same with reading. I am struggling with reading books with serious, heavy stories. I need to read a bit of silliness too. Picture books and Middle Grade books are great for this, as well as some of the comedy books written for adults.

Reading and writing these lighter stories have helped to clear my head and reduce my anxiety. I still have days where life just seems too hard, but a bit of silliness goes a long way to help.
