What I’ve Read – August 2023

Sep 1, 2023 | What I've Read

It’s the start of September, the year is three quarters over! August was full of workshops, and audiobooks, as well as digging out a few books for a reading challenge. One thing I like about reading challenges, especially when it’s a broad topic, is that I can find new to me authors.

Here are the books I’ve read this month:

  • A Woman’s Work by Victoria Purman – I loved this book. While not exactly the experiences of my grandmothers, it did give a bit more insight into what life may have been like for them in some ways, and generally an insight into the life of women just after World War 2.
  • The Warrior In My Wardrobe by Simon Farnaby – I borrowed this from my nephew after enjoying the first one. I really enjoyed this one too.
  • The Last Chance Library by Freya Sampson – this was an audiobook I picked by putting the word ‘library’ in the search on Borrow Box. I enjoyed this story that had a number of twists and an ending that wasn’t as predictable as I thought it might be.
  • Koori Princess by Anita Heiss – I had high hopes for this one, it was chosen for a reading challenge, and it fell short.
  • The Secret Seven by Enid Blyton – I loved these books as a kid, and enjoyed the adventure again as an adult. I listened to this on audiobook.
  • The Talent Show from the Black Lagoon by Mike Thaler – a fun early reader that brought back memories of school concerts.
  • The Switch by Beth O’Leary – an enjoyable audiobook. I think this was another one chosen by putting a random word in the search in Borrow Box. A good adventure from two points of view with a grandmother and granddaughter.
  • Emily’s Tiara Trouble by Samantha Turnbull – a fun story, though did get a bit preachy in some points. This is one I didn’t love but I think the girls it’s aimed at will love it.

There weren’t any picture books this month, that was a surprise as picture books usually feature highly.

I hope you had some great books to read in August. Let me know what you read.
