Worth Reading: Our Family Zoo

May 18, 2026 | Books

If you’ve been around for a while, you’ll know that I love picture books. When I had the opportunity to review a copy of Our Family Zoo by Maura Pierlot and A. Yi, I jumped at the chance.

This is a delightful story about a child who lives surrounded by a wide variety of animals and wants to grow their zoo.

I loved the illustrations of all the animals from pigs to sloths to cats and dogs and koalas and lizards. They are delightful and each animal has its own personality.

The highlight of the story is the main character, a little boy with a love of all animals. Throughout the book, he tries to guess what the new addition to their family zoo will be. I was able to guess part way through, and I can imagine the delight a child will have as they try to guess what the new addition will be as they go through the story. The joy on the boy’s face when the answer is revealed and his reaction is delightful.

Our Family Zoo is a wonderful story that will delight young readers and is a good one for those who love animals as well as for those who are going to have an addition to their family.

This book will be out on 1 June, so pre-order it at your favourite bookshop or in your library. For more information, click here.
