Learning for the sake of learning

I am one of those strange people who likes learning for the sake of learning. I get irritated when I see comments about kids not learning because they aren’t in school as I know that learning can happen anywhere! There are facts in my head that I have no idea where it came from…

One of the best places I find to learn is by reading books. These are not just non-fiction books, you can learn a lot from reading fiction as well.

When learning through reading books, I don’t have to worry about doing tests or essays, I just need to enjoy the story.

I have learned about women in history such as Katherine of Aragon, different aspects of World War 1 and 2, information about stamps and film. I have learned about different countries and cultures and attitudes. I’ve learned about mythical creatures and animals that aren’t in your standard animal story.

I have also learned about some amazing people and events that don’t feature in high school history lessons. I have learned about countries that I may not have gone out of my to discover. I have traveled into space and other dimensions, all while learning about physics and astronomy.

I have learned about being a parent, a grown up, a teenager, how to practice self-care, look after my mental health, and so much more.

All of this is from reading all sorts of books, from picture books to novels, fiction and non-fiction, ebooks, print books, and audiobooks.

You are never too old to learn, and reading books is a great way to pick up knowledge you don’t even know you’re learning! Even if you are reading with the goal of learning something, you may find that you are learning much more than you ever realised.

I love learning for the sake of learning, and reading is a great way to keep the learning going.

What have you been reading and learning lately?
