Inspiration for stories

Inspiration from stories come from many different places. I was talking with someone the other day about my own story and my writing and about how I wrote a lot when I was in high school, even winning some awards for my writing.

In the 15 or so years since I finished high school, I haven’t done a lot of fiction writing, but have got a lot of experience I can draw on. For example, the stories from Accidental WAHM is drawn on the experiences of some of the Mums I worked with.

The stories of Jimmy James, and also the character of Jack that I wrote about this week, are based on my gorgeous boys and their friends.

Any writing teacher will tell you to write what you know, and that’s what I’ve been doing lately.

I also dug out some of my old short stories. There is one that I wrote about a drink drive accident. This one is not inspired by my life, however it is still a good story. I may re-work it one day, but for now it’s sitting in my folder of things I’ve written.

Inspiration can come from anywhere. I’ve also found the story starters in the various online writing workshops I’ve been participating in have helped to prompt a story, drawing on the various characters and stories that I’ve been writing about.

I hope this gives you some insight into where I find inspiration for my writing.
