Favourite Picture Books

Oct 28, 2025 | Blog

Following on from my post last week, I thought I’d continue by sharing some of my favourite picture books. I have quite a few to choose from, given that I have a collection with nearly 300 picture books… it was hard to choose ten to highlight, so there is every chance I’ll do some other posts sharing some amazing picture books.

Here is a short list to get started (this list was harder to create than I thought):

  • The Very Fairy Princess by Julie Andrews, Emma Walton Hamilton & Christine Davenier – I bought this book when I was writing my own princess book, and is one of my all time favourite princess books.
  • The Tale of Wobbly Jim and a Parrot Named Sue by Kate Toon & Will Pearce – This one of the first crowdfunded books I ever bought and it was a huge favourite with my kids as well as my nephews.
  • Raymund and the Fear Monster by Megan Higginson & Ester de Boer – a brilliant picture book about overcoming your fears. There is so much to love about this book, especially the toenails of the fear monster!
  • Grug by Ted Prior – my family was given a copy back in the 1980s and we memorised it. All these years later, I can still recite it. It has been wonderful sharing it with a new generation and seeing it become one of their favourite picture books too.
  • You’re One by Shelly Unwin – this whole series of books, from one to six, are wonderful books that make great birthday gifts for little people to celebrate the amazing humans they are becoming. I gave them to one of my nephews and he loved them.
  • Captain Flynn and the Pirate Dinosaurs by Andreae Giles – I had a child who loved pirates and dinosaurs. To find a picture book that combined the two was brilliant. This was a favourite for a long time.
  • The Voyage by Robert Vescio – a book about being a refugee. One of my nephews loved this one so much he called it ‘the war book’ whenever he requested it. He also reminded me that picture books are for the kids and what they get out of it.
  • Some Brains by Nelly Thomas – a wonderful book celebrating neurodivergent brains, in all their wonderous glory.
  • Diary of a Wombat by Jackie French & Bruce Whatley – I love wombats, I love picture books, so naturally this one had to be on my list. This is a lovely story about a cheeky wombat.
  • When My Brain is Messy by Tania Wieclaw & Rahul Chakraborty – A brilliant book to help explain the neurodivergent brain, featuring a small dinosaur.

Wow, that was hard, there are so many amazing picture books that picking 10 was really hard, keep an eye out for more lists of amazing picture books.
