One Prompt, Multiple Stories Part 2

Mar 11, 2023 | Writers Group

Last month, I posted about our One Prompt, Multiple Stories challenge in Virtual Writers Group.

Yesterday, we had the last session in this series, and everyone had a lot of fun.

The prompt we used was:

Imagine you have picked up a stick, only to find it’s magic. Write about what happens next.

The first session was free writing, where the participants were able to write whatever came to mind.

The second session was to write in a different style or genre than they did in the first one. While all these stories fit in the fantasy genre, some wrote a story for kids or turned it into a steampunk story, or even a disaster adventure. We even had a couple of poems.

The third session was to write from the point of view of the stick. This was a fun challenge with some interesting stories.

The fourth session was to write a story in a non fiction style, such as a newspaper article or instructional piece.

All of these were fun with some great stories, and encouraged the participants to step outside their comfort zones and look at the writing prompt in a different way as well as play with different styles of writing.

We will be doing this again later in the year with a different prompt and different challenges.
