It’s Write on Wednesday time again. For details of this weeks prompt, click here.

Between now & Christmas, I am hoping to write some stories about different aspects of Christmas – just for fun :) I hope you enjoy them.

“Oooh, pretty,” Sophie was in awe. There were candles as far as her four year old eyes could see, glittering in the darkness. Most candles were protected from the wind by a paper cup, giving them a magical appearance, and adding to their beauty.

“They are,” her father agreed with her. Sophie ducked her head down, she was meant to be asleep, but the candles were just too pretty. “It’s OK, sweetie,” her father reassured her. For him there was an excitement he hadn’t experienced since he was a child, the pure joy in the candlelight, reflected in his daughters eyes.

Just then, the music started up again. With her father’s reassurance, secure in the knowledge she wouldn’t get into trouble, she joined in the singing; “We three kings of porridge and tar…” She knew all the words because they had sung it at kinder.

It wasn’t long before Sophie was yawning. It was very late and she wasn’t used to being awake so long. She curled up in her father’s arms, safe and warm. Humming along to the carols, she watched the flickering candles and slowly drifted off to sleep.

Her father looked down at his daughter curled up in his lap and smiled. This was the first time Sophie had been awake to see the candles at their local Carols by Candlelight, and he looked forward to sharing more with her in the years to come.
